Brenda Kane

Psychotherapist & Associate

Brenda is a psychological therapist, with an extensive history of working in mental health.  She started her career in mental health as a Mental Health Nurse; working in acute admissions prior to working in Community Day Services with people with a diagnosed Psychotic illness.  Latterly she worked in Homelessness, leading a team who worked across the local authority and NHS service in an outreach approach to streamline identified needs in a holistic approach.   Brenda feels she learned a lot from the people she worked with and in particular the impact of psychosocial interventions, therapeutic relationship and therapy.

When an opportunity arose to train in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) she was keen, a model introduced to her by a Psychiatrist she worked with.   Brenda continued to value the therapeutic relationship and the ability to work with particular therapeutic models to collaboratively work towards improving the mental health and wellbeing of those she worked with.  Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) initially came to her attention when training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); and has been an ongoing interest over the years.

She has specialist training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Mindfulness and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).   Brenda has worked in an adult Psychological Therapies team initially part time from 2009; since 2015 she has focussed her time in full to the delivery of Psychological Therapies.

Developing a self interest in Mindfulness she progressed to teacher level and has facilitated 8 week programmes and taster Mindfulness sessions to staff groups, enabling others to consider the benefits of fostering awareness and engaging in regular practice.

Out with work, Brenda enjoys time with her family and black Labrador; reading; Mindfulness practice; getting out in nature walking local hills and has goals to bag more Munros over the next few years and when restrictions allow is keen to continue her love of travel.
