Dr Charlie Heriot-Maitland

Clinical Psychologist & Director

Dr Charlie Heriot-Maitland is a clinical psychologist, researcher and trainer. Charlie completed his clinical psychology training at the University of Oxford, and for the first 13 years of his career, provided psychological therapies in the NHS mental health services. He co-founded Balanced Minds with two of his NHS colleagues in 2012, and has since been working there as a director and a therapist offering Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT). Charlie continues to provide supervision, training, and consultancy in the NHS, as well as other organisations across multiple sectors, including healthcare, social care, education, and charities.

Charlie’s academic interests include understanding the role of trauma and compassion in psychosis, and he has spent several years researching the application of CFT for people with distressing experiences associated with psychosis (with Fellowship funding awarded by the UK Medical Research Council, 2014-2019). He has co-authored a self-help book aimed at helping voice-hearers, called Relating to Voices using Compassion Focused Therapy.

Charlie has authored a number of research papers and book chapters, has given numerous invited talks, and regularly runs compassion training workshops for professionals and for the general public, both nationally and internationally.
