Sue Black originally qualified as a mental health nurse, then completed her training as a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist and has been accredited with the BABCP since 2007.

Sue worked in the NHS for over 20 years, working with a range of mental health difficulties, including depression; anxiety disorders such as health anxiety, OCD, post-traumatic stress disorder and eating disorders. She also worked in the Health Psychology team helping people adjust to long term health conditions such as cardiac disease, cancer, diabetes, CFS/ME, chronic pain.

She became interested in Compassion Focused Therapy and gained a Post Graduate Certificate at Derby University in 2017, and since then has incorporated the approach more and more into her clinical practice. Both within her NHS role and for Balanced Minds Sue has delivered the 8-week Compassionate Mind Training developed by Chris Irons and Charlie Heriot-Maitland.

Sue’s approach is to work alongside people to help them understand how and why their difficulties arose and what might be contributing to keeping them going. She likes to work collaboratively towards alleviation of distress and an improved quality of life.

Sue also has extensive experience of clinical supervision, providing supervision to trainees and colleagues within her NHS roles, and supervising those who have completed the CMT facilitator training.

Sue also provides individual supervision incorporating CBT and CFT.
